
Elias Giacoumidis
An expert in physical-layer optical communications and signal processing, he is a member of IEEE and OSA and was recognized as an Outstanding Reviewer for IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology in 2016. He pioneered the cost-effective direct-detection optical Fast-OFDM transmission system and was the first to apply digital machine learning to mitigate fiber nonlinearity in multicarrier coherent optical communications. His research focuses on high-capacity optical transmission, advanced DSP-based modulation (OFDM, CAP, PAM-4), and nonlinear photonics for next-gen networks. He has led multiple international projects, including Germany’s VPI-Photonics initiative on fiber capacity constraints, with 120+ publications and 2,000+ citations.
